최현주 : 상상정원 - My Dream My Prayer

동양화를 전공한 최현주 작가는 졸업 후 가구, 도자공예, 애니메이션 등 여러 예술분야에서 작업을 해온 독특한 이력을 갖고 있다. 이러한 넓은 관심사는 각기 다른 재료와 소재에 애착을 가진 작가가 동양화의 큰 틀 안에서 느낀 감정을 자유롭게 캔버스에 담아낼 수 있도록 해주었다. 가족들과 함께 간 긴 세계여행을 마치고 캔버스 앞에 다시 앉은 그가 만들어낸 상상정원은 이질적인 조합으로 가득하지만 결코 무질서하지는 않다. 현실과 꿈의 경계가 교차하는 상상정원에 들어간 사물들은 작가의 손에 선택되어 우리에게 새로운 이야기를 전달하고자 생기를 띤 채 움직이며 변화한다. 이번 전시에 참여하는 작품들 중 <복숭아꽃이 피었습니다>(2020)에서는 작은 접시에 담긴 물이 아기자기한 마을 주위로 흐르며 얕은 시냇물을 이루었다. 그 위로 화사하고 거대한 복숭아꽃이 자라서 화폭 밖으로 나올 듯이 생명력과 존재감을 뽐내고 있다. 작품 <내 마음의 정원>(2020)은 아침 식사 접시 위에 등장할 법한 계란 프라이가 수면 위를 떠다니며 잎사귀와 꽃송이로 활짝 피어나는 현상을 그려냈다. 이렇듯 상상정원에는 값비싸거나 특별한 것 없는 지극히 평범한 사물들이 모여 있지만, 작가는 화폭을 초자연적이고 유쾌한 현상들로 가득 채우고 있다. 상상정원은 작가의 위트가 돋보이며, 다양한 오브제의 크기와 모양, 때로는 용도가 새로운 환경에서 변형되고 재구성되어 있다. 이러한 비일상적 모습들은 작가가 하는 이야기에 더욱 귀를 기울이게 하며 관객들의 상상력을 자극시킨다.

최현주 작가가 자신의 예술세계를 표현하고자 강조하는 ‘상상’은 유쾌함과 기발함으로 가득한 이번 전시를 관통하는 주제이다. 작가는 마치 갓 세상을 배우기 시작한 아이처럼 순수한 영감을 갖고 캔버스 위로 사물들 간의 우리가 세계를 받아들이는 맥락성의 해체를 통해 다양한 사고의 전환을 시도한다. 이미 어느 정도 세상을 관찰하고 사고의 틀이 잡힌 이들은 매 순간 무의식적으로 특정한 사물에 맥락과 정체성을 부여한다. 이를테면 앞서 나온 계란 프라이가 접시나 프라이팬 위에 있는 것이나, 대중문화의 아이콘인 스파이더맨이 스크린에서 빌딩 사이를 타고 다니는 장면을 보고 자연스럽다고 느끼는데 반해, 노른자에서 꽃이 피는 계란 프라이와 매화나무 가지 아래로 날아다니는 자그마한 스파이더맨은 현실적인 맥락에서 벗어나 색다르고 우연적인 정체성을 갖게 되는 존재다. 최현주 작가의 이미지들은 이처럼 사물들 간의 자연스러운 맥락의 역발상을 통해 작품을 바라보는 관람객들의 상상력에 무제한적인 힘을 부여할 것이다.

Majored in oriental painting, Hyunjoo Choe has continually explored diverse diciplines and creative areas such as furniture, ceramic, and animation. Her broad artistic interest in different materials and subjects helped Choe to freely express her emotion on canvas within the extended borders of oriental painting. After a long-term family trip around the world, Choe once again sat in front of her new canvas and began to create the 'Garden of Imagination.' This garden is full of strange and unexpected objects, and the border of reality and dream slowly starts to disappear as these objects lively change to tell us new stories. Within the exhibition is an area for Choe's vibrant artwork 'Peach Blossom has Bloomed.' This work shows a gorgeous and gigantic peach blossom tree full of energy and vitality. However, looking it closely, people can find out this tree has taken root in shallow stream around a lovely villege thriving within a small vessel. Choe also painted fried eggs floating on the surface of river and evolving into leaves and flowers in her another work titled 'The Garden in My Heart.' As such, the garden of imagination is a place where ordinary, inexpensive objects get together. The artist fills the canvas with supernatural and pleasant phenomena. The garden shows Choe's wit, and the size and shape of various objects, or sometimes their uses, are transformed and recreated in the new environment. These unusual images will let the audience listen carefully of the artist's hidden stories and stimulate their imagination.

Hyunjoo Choe used the word "imagination" to represent her art world. It is also a theme that penetrates the current exhibition, which is full of joy and ingenuity. The artist gets pure inspiration as if she had just begun to learn about the world around her, and attempts to transform the way we normally experience the world by disinterpretating the context between objects. Those who have already observed and learned about the world to a certain extent unconsciously assign context and identity to a particular object. For example, people think fried egg on plates or pop culture icon Spider-Man climbing the buildings on the screen is a normal scene than flower blooming and growing from yolk or a tiny Spider-Man moving within the branches of the plum tree; these selected objects show different, accidental identity which have little connection to the realisic context. For the visitors of this show, Choe's image will offer unlimited power to the imagination through interesting displacement of idea as well as natural function and context between objects.
