​조병왕 : Horizontal Scape

조병왕 작가는 최근 자연물이자 자신의 의식을 표방하는 거대한 ‘창조물’인 바다를 주제로 작업을 시작했다. 평평한 캔버스 위로 모습을 드러낸 바다는 쌓아올린 시간의 겹을 통해 형성되고 성장하며, 작가는 이러한 과정에 처음부터 끝까지 개입하고 목격하는 유일한 증인이자 부모격인 존재가 되어 깊은 유대를 형성한다. 바다의 수평선을 연상시키듯 캔버스 위에 반복적으로 그어지고 중첩되는 수많은 선은 조병왕 작가의 중요한 행위적 요소이자 언어적 기호이다. 그의 ‘기하학적 칼 드로잉’ 연작과 이번 전시에서 선보이는 ‘침적의 선’ 연작은 공통적으로 다양한 수평선이 만들어내는 역동적인 공간을 그려낸다. 조병왕 작가가 오랫동안 작업해온 ‘기하학적 칼 드로잉’ 연작은 삼원색 사이안, 마젠타, 옐로우의 형광안료를 활용하여 그림을 그리면서 시작된다. 작가는 그가 그린 그림을 사진으로 찍어 컬러 인화한 뒤, 반들반들한 표면 위에 자와 칼날이 만들어내는 예리한 수평선으로 화면을 채우는 독특한 프로세스를 갖고 있다. 그에 반해 작가의 ‘침적의 선’ 연작은 앞선 작업들의 기계적 메커니즘은 모두 배제하고 물감의 특징과 몸의 원초적인 움직임에 다시 주목했다는 점에서 본질적인 변화를 보여준다. 작가는 아래로 흘러내리는 물감 덩어리의 회화적 물성을 활용하며 고요하고 깊이 있는 색의 층을 표현하고자 했다. 자로 댄 듯 완벽한 수평을 이루는 대신 번지고 흘러내리는 바다의 모습은 물결치는 작가 자신의 내면을 추상적 언어로 나타낸 듯하다. 이번 전시 작품들에 구현된 바다의 진화과정은 작가의 반복된 시간 속에서 깊은 울림을 가진 생명력과 역사성을 부여받아 새롭게 탄생하였음을 증명하고 있다.

​Recently Byung-wang Cho has started working on a new theme: the sea. It is a natural "creation" representing his consciousness. On a flat canvas, the sea gets matured through layers of time and movement. Here, the artist forms a deep bond with the sea as the only witness and parent who can intervene and control in this process from the beginning to the end. As reminiscent of the horizon of the sea, numerous lines drawn and overlapped repeatedly on canvas are part of an important behavioral element in Cho's visual language. His "Geometric Line Drawing" as well as the "Line of Invasion" series presented in this solo exhibition portrays a dynamic space created by these various horizontal lines. The first step of the "Geometric Line Drawing" series which the artist has worked on is to draw pictures using three primary colors: cyan, magenta, and yellow. Cho's unique process of artmaking continues as he takes pictures of his paintings and prints them in color, then fills the surface of the image with sharpened horizontal lines drawn with a ruler and blade. On the other hand, "The Line of Invasion" series reveals an essential change in that Cho excluded all the mechanical mechanisms of the preceding works. Also Cho tried to re-examine the characteristics of the paint and the pure movement of the artist's body. He has expressed a layer of calm, deep colors, using the pictorial elements of paint slowly flowing downwards. Instead of forming a perfect horizontal shape, the flowing sea seems to reflect on the waves of the artist's innermost thoughts in abstract language. The evolutionary process of the sea embodied in the artworks proves that the deeply resonant vitality and historicity of the artist's repeated time has awakened the sea.
