이상은 : Time · Color Flow

작가 이상은은 오랜 과거부터 ‘시간의 층, 시간의 집적’이라는 주제로 콜라쥬, 회화, 디지털 프린트, 영상에 이르기 까지 다양한 매체를 넘나드는 활동을 이어왔다. 그는 때로는 추상회화로, 때로는 세련된 영상으로 우리의 눈을 즐겁게 해 주었지만 항상 ‘시간’이라는 평범하고도 심오한 주제로 되돌아오곤 했다. 기억의 조각을 뜻하는 선과 수많은 관계의 층을 쌓아 흐름과 집적을 만들어내는 끝이 없는 고독한 작업에 정진하는 작가의 모습은 무수히 반복되는 고된 작업에도 빈 터와도 같은 편안한 모습으로 우리에게 다가온다. 인간은 현전하고 지속하는 시간적인 존재이며 그의 시간은 그가 만나고 돌봄으로써 모습을 드러낸다. 그의 시간이란 명백하게 분리된 과거, 현재, 미래로서가 아니라 기억과 직관 그리고 기대라는 인식의 다른 모습들을 통해 현재 이 순간으로 녹아든 시간의 매트릭스다.

시간은 쌓이고 공간은 유유히 흐른다. 같은 자리에서, 반복적인 행위로 시간의 집적을 보여주는 작가는 존재의 의미를 찾아 방황하기보다는 사방에 흩어진 기억과 순간의 파편들을 쌓아가기로 작정을 한 듯이 보인다. 디지털 영상과 회화, 판화의 화면들은 공통적으로 선의 쌓임이 만들어내는 역동적 공간을 그려낸다. 작품 전편을 통해 색과 선은 중요한 조형의 요소이자 언어적 기호이다. 각각의 색은 그 순간 일어나는 감정과 감각의 온도를 드러내고 붓질의 선은 작가가 마주하고 떠올리는 만남의 행위를 나타낸다. 빛 없이는 출현이 있을 수 없다. 작가는 그의 순간을 조명함으로써 의미를 드러내고 조명된 시간의 면들은 각각의 기쁨과 고통, 슬픔과 희열을 색으로써 반사한다. 이 색들이 생생한 색채의 스펙트럼을 보여주는 것은 그것이 기억과 직관의 색이기 때문이다. 붓을 들어 내리긋는 그의 몸짓은 무겁게 한 땀 한 땀 그의 삶을 그어내고 있고 그의 댓가로 작품의 공간과 시간은 보는 이에 무한한 자유와 비움을 선사한다. 소실점이 없는 그의 화면을 바라보는 이의 몸은 계속해서 우주 끝까지 확장된다.

Sang-eun Lee has been active in various art fields ranging from collages, paintings, digital prints, and videos with the theme of 'layers of time and accumulation of time.' Sometimes her works pleased our eyes with abstract paintings and often with refined images, but she always returned to the ordinary and yet profound theme of 'time'. Lee has always continued to experiment with visuality and extend the media she used, and her consistent and abstract theme 'time' is a concept that represents her life and herself. The artist devotes herself to an endless, solitary process of work by building layers of lines and relationships that signify pieces of memory. The artist presents her time through connections and interactions that exist in her life. In that sense, Lee's time is not an isolated definition of past, present, and future; it is rather a matrix of time observed into this moment through different aspects of the perception of memory, intuition, and expectation.

Time accumulates and space flows slowly. Her paradoxical time and space link to a moment of building her own life and a process of finding the scattered pieces of her memory. In the same place, it seems the artist who shows the accumulation of time with repetitive movements is collecting fragments of memories and moments scattered around her, rather than simply wandering in search of the meaning of existence. Her digital videos, paintings, and prints show dynamic space created through layers of lines.

Throughout Lee's creative work, colors and lines are important elements of formative and visual language. Each color reveals the emotion and sensation occurring at that moment, and the line of brushstroke represents the encounter that the artist confronts and recalls. There can be no presence without light. By illuminating her moment, Sang-eun Lee reveals its meanings, and the illuminated parts of time reflect each happiness and pain, sorrow and joy by color. These show a vivid spectrum of colors because they are the colors of memory and intuition. Her presence in the work is strong as it can be, but the image on canvas is infinitely free.
