박철환 : 영원의 언어

신비로운 자연풍경을 그리는 중년 작가 박철환은 영적이면서도 마치 한 장의 사진과도 같은 탐미적인 작품세계를 화면 한 가득 담아낸다. 그의 사실적 묘사는 배경의 밑칠 작업에서부터 돌가루를 젤에 개서 바르며 찍고, 베껴내고, 긁어내는 등 우연적인 효과를 강조한다. 얼핏 보면 공간감이 느껴지지 않는 평면적인 배경이지만 그 위로 입체적인 선과 면들이 겹겹이 쌓이며 추상적 깊이감을 만들어낸 작업과정은 우리의 예상보다 훨씬 많은 시간이 소요되었음을 보여준다.

원숙함이 묻어나는 감각적 표현에 더해 박철환 작가의 동양화에 대한 관심과 현대적 재해석은 그의 조형언어에 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 작가는 인체의 아름다움과 추함에서 인간의 실존과 우주까지 꾸준히 그의 예술적 주제의 영역을 확장했으며, 최근에는 캔버스에 붓과 아크릴 물감을 가지고 ‘인물 또는 문인화를 닮은 정물화’를 그리고 싶다고 했다. 이번 전시에 참여하는 20여점 이상의 작품들은 박철환 작가가 서양화의 재료와 형식을 가지고 전통 문인화의 정신을 표현하기 위한 깊이 있는 시도의 결과물이다. 작가는 꼿꼿하게 서서 사시사철 푸르름을 과시하는 소나무, 우아한 곡선을 품은 백자 달항아리, 봄 향기가 가득 퍼지는 듯한 깨끗한 흰 목련, 모란 등 한국 문인화에 자주 등장하는 소재를 주로 선택한다. 거기에 더해 특유의 강한 붓질과 고도의 기교를 통해 살아난 사실적이면서 정교한 묘사의 정물 뒤로 추상적인 바탕을 그려 넣으며, 동양화의 여백의 미를 강조하고 자신만의 감성을 간접적으로 표현한다. 박철환 작가의 작품들은 극사실적 정물화로 불릴 정도로 캔버스 위의 화면이 사진 혹은 실제 대상보다도 생생하게 살아나 모습을 드러냈지만, 작가에게 있어 보이는 것을 그저 기계적으로 재현하는 것은 그의 예술적 목적이 아니다. 박철환 작가는 자신의 그림에서 대상 내면의 변하지 않은 이미지를 찾아내며, 화려하진 않지만 은은하고 맑은 문인화의 정신을 강조하고 이를 표현하고자 하기 때문이다.

그는 혹독한 겨울을 견딘 꽃이 가진 충만한 생명력과, 푸른 소나무와 거세게 일렁이는 바다가 보여주는 자연의 영속성에 강한 감정이입의 정서를 자아낸다. 자연은 매번 다른 모습인 듯 보여도, 끊임없이 자라고, 피어나고, 일렁이면서 인간은 오직 의식으로만 이해할 수 있는 영원하고도 신비로운 특성을 품고 있다. 박철환 작가가 언제나 바라보고 표현하고자 하는 세계는 영원히 본질이 변하지 않는 자연에 대한 경외감이라는 일관된 시각에서 출발하며, 자연물 안에 내재한 영적인 아름다움을 찾고자 하는 진지한 노력의 결과물인 것이다.

Chulhwan Park, a middle-aged artist who paints a mysterious landscape, is acclaimed for his expression of the scene that is spiritual and yet extremely realistic as a photograph. His techniques emphasize accidental effects as he starts to mix stone powder on the gel, then spread, scratch, scrape on the background of his paintings. The background seems flat at first glance, but creating an abstract depth with layers of lines and touches is a lot more time-consuming process than we imagine.

In addition to his mature and sensuous expression, Park's interest in oriental painting and its contemporary reinterpretation has greatly influenced his visual language. The artist expanded his artistic subject from the beauty and ugliness of the human body to the realm of the real world and the universe. Recently, he stated that he wants to paint "a still-life resembling portrait and literati painting." More than 20 artworks in the current exhibition are the result of Park's attempt to express the spirituality found in traditional literati paintings with the formal aesthetics of Western art. The artist selected many subjects often found in Korean literati paintings: pine trees that show off their greenness throughout the four seasons, white porcelain moon jars with elegant curves, pure white magnolias with the scent of spring, and peony. Moreover, behind his realistic and elaborate still lifes, Park painted abstract background to emphasize the beauty of blank space and to express his sensitivity in a rather indirect way. Although his artworks are so-called hyper-realistic still lifes that the image on the canvas comes to life more vividly than photographs, it is not his artistic purpose to simply reproduce what he sees. He seeks out unchanged imagery inside the objects and attempts to express the subtle and innocent spirituality of literary paintings.

The artist evokes a feeling of empathy for the vitality of the delicate flowers that endured the harsh winter, and the permanence of nature in the green pine trees and the sea. Even though nature seems to be a different shape every time, it is constantly growing, blooming, and moving; this is an eternal and mysterious characteristic of nature that can only be understood by our consciousness. The world that Chulhwan Park has always desired to see and express begins with a view of awe for nature whose essence does not change forever. This indicates the result of his sincere effort to find the spiritual beauty inherent in nature.
