조병섭 : Paper Landscape

아트파크는 세브란스 아트스페이스에서 조각가 조병섭의 개인전을 개최한다. 작가가 처음으로 대중에게 선보이는 종이로 만든 작품들은 산, 강, 해안, 건물 등 우리 주변 자연경관에서 찾아볼 수 있는 형태와 패턴들에서 탄생했다. 자전거 여행 중 고요한 풍경에 영감을 받은 작가는 사진으로 찍은 풍경을 두꺼운 종이로 렌더링하며 조화롭게 엮어내었다.

예술작품을 만드는 행위에서 조병섭 작가는 가장 직접적인 몸짓과 단순한 형태감에서 발견할 수 있는 잠재력을 최대한 경험한다. 한국의 풍경을 흑백, 혹은 흰 선으로 표현하면서, 그는 광택이 나는 금속과 바위를 이용한 조병섭의 조각작품에 익숙한 사람들의 예상을 깨버린다. 이러한 극적인 변화의 원칙 중 하나는 예술창작에 있어서의 우연이다. 그는 종이 표면을 뜯어냄으로써 우연히 유기적인 선과 모양을 창조하고자 시도한다. 조병섭 작가는 '종이 풍경'을 창조하는데 있어서 이러한 우연을 즐긴다. 이번 전시에 나온 조병섭의 새로운 작품들은 시적인 풍경과 백지를 함께 연결시켜 선보일 것이다. 이 전시회는 2019년 6월 9일까지 계속된다.

We are pleased to introduce a solo exhibition of sculptor Cho, Byungsup which includes his new series of paper works. On view for the first time, these works reveal Cho’s ongoing dialogue with the surfaces and patterns of surrounding environment – from mountains, rivers, seashores, and buildings. Inspired by the tranquil landscape during his cycling trips, Cho renders these photographed sceneries in thick papers, uniting formal processes within harmonious forms.

In the act of art-making, the artist physically experiences the full potential of the most direct gestures and simple forms. Translating three-dimensional Korean landscape into black or white colors and lines, Cho confounds expectations of viewers who are familiar to his sculptural practice using highly polished metals and rocks. One of the guiding principles in its dramatic change was the idea of coincidence in art, and he attempts to create organic lines and shapes for chance by ripping off papers. Cho, Byungsup enjoys this coincidence in creating ‘paper landscape.’ This new series of works in Cho’s latest exhibition will bring poetic landscape and white paper together. The exhibition will be on view through June 9, 2019.
