이승오 : Paper Flowers

이승오는 친숙한 화가들의 정물을 감각적으로 재창조한 작품들을 전시한다. 고흐의 불타는 듯한 황금빛깔의 해바라기나 마티스의 우아한 화병과 노란 꽃이 놓인 정물처럼 한번쯤은 보았을 거장들의 작품을 이승오는 단순히 재현하는 것에 그치지 않고 독자적인 조형언어를 통해 완성도있는 이미지를 만들고 있다.

남과 다른 예술표현수단을 찾아 붓을 손에서 놓은 이승오는 겹겹이 쌓거나 말아놓은 종이의 단면을 이용하는 방법으로 회화적인 형태감과 조형을 담아내었다. 거칠게, 때로는 정교하게 절단한 종이의 단면들이 높낮이가 다르게 쌓여있고, 종이의 결과 결 사이에서 보이는 다양한 색상들은 마치 생동감 넘치는 붓터치처럼 느껴진다. 이렇듯 그의 작품들은 높은 수준의 정교함과 더불어 2차원임에도 3차원적 공간감이 리드미컬하게 깃들어있어 보는 이들의 호기심과 경탄을 자아내고 있다.

Lee Seoung-oh’s art is one of the most inventive and unrestrained interpretations of famous still life images. In this exhibition, Lee created works of great textural density with his unique visual language rather than simply reproducing the classic works of art such as Van Gogh’s golden sunflower with fiery blooms or Matisse's elegant vase and yellow flower paintings.

In search of an entirely unique artistic expression, Lee Seoung-oh practices a technique of using the edge of rolled or stacked papers. Rough (or often refined) stacks assemble ‘painting-like compositions and brushwork’ through layers of different colored papers. Lee’s exclusively detailed series of artworks with a three-dimensional sense of depth will offer memorable visitor experience that promotes curiosity and wonder.
