임정은 : 깊이의 단서

작가 임정은의 작업은 보이지 않는 이면의 세계와 근원적인 존재인 빛에 대한 일관된 관심에서 시작된다. 이번 개인전의 주제인 ‘깊이의 단서’는 시각예술에서 가상의 깊이를 표현하며 착시를 유도하는 점, 선, 면, 형, 색, 농도, 움직임 등의 요소들을 지칭한다.

3차원을 2차원 평면이미지에 창조해내는 선은 형태를 결정하는 중요한 단서이며 선의 굵기, 길이, 간격 등에 따라 리듬과 감정을 전달하는 요소이다. 임정은의 최근 작품들은 선의 굵기와 색의 대비를 통해 보이지 않는 세계의 본질이 드러나도록 표현하고 있으며, 빛을 통과시키는 투영과 반사하여 비추는 반영의 효과들을 다양한 방법으로 실험하고 있다. 투영과 반영은 그의 주작업 재료인 유리의 대표적인 속성이다. 임정은은 유리를 투영하는 빛에 의해 만들어진 색 그림자를 벽이나 바닥에 중첩시킬 때 명도가 높아지는 효과를 시각적으로 표현하거나, 중복된 레이어를 통해서 ‘복수의 피사체의 이미지’를 지속적으로 뒤섞는 사진을 연출하는 등 빛과 색의 농도에 의한 깊이의 단서들을 가지고 작업하고 있다. 이렇듯 작가는 가장 기본적인 조형 요소들을 탐구하며, 빛의 투영과 반영을 통해 이미지와 그림자, 색채의 현란한 일루전 효과를 전개한다.

In the Clue of Profondeur, an examination of Lim Jeoung-eun’s artwork reveals a deep connective tissue within her scope of inquiry. Her preoccupation about ideational light and the unseen world beyond the material world led her to develop a body of works which explore basic elements such as dot, line, space, shape, color, concentration, and movement. As the title of this exhibition suggests, Lim applied these elements to show imaginary profondeur which causes optical illusions in visual art.

As a significant tool to create the illusion of three-dimensionality with two-dimensional image, lines with different length, thickness, and distance can attain rhythm and evoke emotion. With various lines and contrast in colors, Lim’s recent works tried to convey the essence of the world. Also, it is possible to notice that she has been continuously experimenting with the projection and reflection of light since she began this series. Polished glass or metal surface, that is, her most frequently used artistic medium, reflects and transmits light ray. Her visual experiment with the depth of light and color applied some scientific principles by showing that colored shadow of light that goes through glass objects has higher brightness as it overlaps. Lim also created mixed-up ‘images of multiple subjects’ for photography through overlapped layers. In this way, many of the works in this exhibition reveal the way in which Lim has explored the basic elements of visual language, and create illusion effect of image, shadow, and color.
