이호철 : The God's Garden

몇 십여 년 전 하얀 건물 벽에 영사된 무성영화를 보면서 나도 모르게 초대된 신의 정원을 맘껏 거닐었다. 요란했던 무성영화가 꺼지면, 허상과 실상의 미묘한 경계를 실감할 수 있었다. 중첩된 파이프와 서랍 작업 이후, 캔버스 대신 슈퍼미러 위에 이미지를 그리면서, 이 이미지를 보고 있을 때 나 자신을 덤으로 보게 된다. 이미지에 중첩된 이미지들이 혼합될 때 실상과 허상의 카오스는 과연 무엇인가? 돌이켜보건대 간신히 天命을 알게 된 후 철이 없었던 장인 의식을 털어버리고, 즐거운 신의 정원지기로 들어서게 되었다. 어린 왕자처럼 오직 이미지들에 물을 주면서 신의 정원을 다 같이 향유하고자 한다.

A few decades ago, while watching a silent film projected onto white walls, I was invited to the God's garden where I could freely walk around. There was not even a single sign of contamination when this flashy silent film ended, and I felt the subtle, unseen boundaries between reality and illusion. After finishing series of artworks with nested pipes and drawers, I began to paint acrylic on super mirror instead of canvas. Looking at these images, I see myself reflected on the surface of the mirror. When overlapped images mix with different images, how can we define the chaos of reality and illusion? Is it an act of creating an image to deliver a message through art? In retrospect, I stopped pursuing mastery artisanship as I realized the Mandate of Heaven, and entered the higher path of the God's gardener. Like the little prince in a famous French novella, I wish to share the joy I had experienced in the God's garden by watering the images of mine.
